Gertrude E. (Jacobs) Demmy, age 87, of Harrisburg, went to be with her Lord on Monday, July 14, 2014 at the Jewish Home of Harrisburg.

Born September 27, 1926 in Harrisburg, she was the daughter of the late David and Ida (Sugar) Jacobs, and was also preceded in death by her siblings: Ruth Blackburn, Robert Jacobs, Sr., Richard Jacobs, Norma Jean Jacobs, Donald Jacobs and Stanley Jacobs.

“Gret” or “Gitto”, as she was known to family, was a 1944 graduate of William Penn High School and for many years loved and cared for many children in her home, who lovingly called her Aunt Gret. She fell in love with the boy next door, and during the years of World War II, waited at the home front for her soldier to come home, marrying him in 1945.

She was a member of the First Assembly of God Church where she was a nursery room attendant; and enjoyed crossword puzzles, crocheting, and flower arranging. Her greatest joy, however, came from doting on and caring for her beloved husband and family.

Surviving is her husband of 68 years, Floyd J. Demmy; her children: David W. Demmy, Sr. (and Marilyn), Harrisburg, Deborah A. Livingston (and Larry), Dauphin and Heidi M. Stanalonis (and Paul), Mechanicsburg; one sister: Miriam Fisher; two brothers: James and Joseph Jacobs; 5 grandchildren: David Demmy Jr., Jonathan Demmy, Jennifer Demmy, Sara Allison and Carrie Hannon; her precious great granddaughter: Aubree Demmy; and her special companion, her cat, Remy.

Services will be held 11:00 am Thursday, July 17, 2014 in her church, 4100 N. Progress Avenue, Harrisburg, with Rev. Terry Lamer, her pastor, officiating. There will be a viewing from 10:00 am to 11:00 am Thursday at the church. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her name to the American Heart Association, 1019 Mumma Road, Wormleysburg, 17043.
